What to know
Identifying the cockroach species in your home is the first step in any treatment plan. Different species have different behaviour, prefer different harbourage zones, and respond to different treatment methods. Treating the wrong species with the wrong method is the single most common reason cockroach problems recur within 1 to 2 months. In Malaysian homes, four cockroach species are commonly encountered. German cockroach is the smallest at 12 to 15mm, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. American cockroach is the largest at 30 to 40mm, reddish-brown with a yellow band behind the head. Oriental cockroach is 20 to 25mm, dark brown to black, and prefers cooler damp areas. Australian cockroach is 25 to 35mm, similar to American but with yellow edges on the thorax. Each species has characteristic behaviour, preferred harbourage, and treatment approach. If you are seeing cockroaches and are not sure which species, take a clear photo and send it to us. We can usually identify the species from a photo and recommend the right treatment. The species determines whether we focus on gel bait, perimeter spray, drain treatment, or a combination.
Most recurring cockroach cases we see in Klang Valley are German cockroaches in high-rise apartments. They look small and light brown, and they scatter when you turn on the kitchen light. The treatment is gel bait placement across all harbourage zones, not surface spray.
Why species matters
Each species responds to different treatment methods. German cockroaches need gel bait, American cockroaches need perimeter and drain treatment. Wrong treatment is the most common reason for recurrence.
How to identify what you have
Take a clear photo, note the size and colour, and observe where you see them. Send the photo to us during the booking call and we can advise the treatment approach.
What to do before the visit
Try not to spray the area. Surface sprays scatter cockroaches and make the inspection harder. We need to find the harbourage zones to treat them properly.
After identification
Once we confirm the species during the inspection, we will recommend the right treatment method and explain why it is different from generic spray-based services.
Practical action plan
- Take a clear photo of the cockroach if you can. Include something for size reference, like a coin or your finger next to it.
- Note where you see them. Kitchen, bathroom, ceiling void, drains, behind appliances, garage. Each location points to a different species.
- Note when you see them. German cockroaches are active at night and scatter when light comes on. American cockroaches are also nocturnal but less reactive. Daytime activity often indicates a large population.
- Send the photo and observations to us during the booking call. We can usually identify the species and confirm the treatment approach before the visit.
- On the visit day, our technician will confirm the species and locate the harbourage zones, then apply the right treatment method for that species.

Frequently asked questions
Are German cockroaches the same as small cockroaches?
Yes. German cockroaches are the small, light brown cockroaches about 12 to 15mm long that scatter when the light comes on. They are the most common species in Malaysian apartments and condos. They reproduce faster than other species and need targeted gel bait treatment, not surface spray.
How do I know if I have American cockroaches?
American cockroaches are the large reddish-brown cockroaches 30 to 40mm long with a yellow band behind the head. They are more common in terrace houses, landed homes, and commercial kitchens. They prefer warm, humid areas and are often seen in drains, refuse rooms, and basements.
What is the difference between American and Australian cockroaches?
Both are large (25 to 40mm) and reddish-brown. The key difference is the Australian cockroach has distinctive yellow edges on the thorax (the shield-like area behind the head). Both species respond to similar treatment, but Australian cockroaches are more common in outdoor and garden areas.
Can cockroach species be different in different rooms?
Yes. A high-rise apartment can have German cockroaches in the kitchen and Oriental cockroaches in the bathroom drains at the same time. Each needs a different treatment method. Our inspection identifies the species per zone so treatment is scoped correctly.
What if I cannot tell which species I have?
Send us a photo and describe where you are seeing them. We can usually identify the species from a clear photo plus the location pattern. If we cannot, our technician will confirm on site during the inspection.
